Software Imports, Email Integration, Central Images

Here are a few more glimpses into what’s coming up in version 10 of iMindMap, although they aren’t major enough to merit an official iMindMap video just yet…

Import ‘Foreign’ Maps

By ‘foreign’ map imports, we’re talking about the unexpected ability to open mind maps from other mind mapping software applications, in fact. Oh yeah!

Like maps made with MindManager or XMind for example.

This is quite a biggie, and I first talked about it rather excitedly way back in Sneak Peek article No.2 which was mainly about the new Biggerplate mind map library integration.

iMindMap 10 Preview Software Conversion

We will have to see just how easy it is to import maps from other software (and what they will end up looking like), and whether you can also export iMindMaps too. If this works well it will mean easier communication between colleagues and companies which use different mind mapping solutions.

I’d also appreciate the ability to grab some of the rich information out there in other maps and convert it to the iMindMap form I generally far prefer.

The full list of non-iMindMap mind maps you can import into iMindMap so far announced is: iMindQ, FreeMind, ConceptDraw, MindGenius, XMind and MindManager. MindMeister is notably absent from this list. Map on!

Send Email From Inside iMindMap

It may not have occurred to you but every time you want to send someone the latest version of a map you are currently working on, you have to save it in some way and then head over to your email program and attach the file ‘manually’, as it were. No longer, apparently.

iMindMap 10 Preview Email integration

Soon you will be able to send either the original, editable .imx (iMindMap) file, or as an image, directly from within the program. As long as we have a fair range of savin’ ‘n’ sendin’ options, such as choosing from a several file types and choosing a suitable level of compression, it should be a useful new feature.

New Central Idea Images

The main news here is that there are 50 new images design as starting points for the ‘central idea’ on their way in the new version. It’s not yet clear whether they will replace the current ones (which would be irritating) or simply swell the choice, which would seem sensible.

iMindMap 10 Preview central images

Personally, I rarely use one of the inbuilt central idea images in the final version of a major map. For simple pieces and everyday uses, however, I often enjoy starting with a design I haven’t used before.

I’d certainly welcome some new ones to choose from and I’m looking forward to seeing what they’ve come up with.

Just as a matter of interest, ThinkBuzan are hinting that the best new updates to iMindMap are yet to come, so watch this space!
