The new version is coming soon, and you’ll be able to read all about it in our exclusive and detailed iMindMap 10 review in a few weeks.
In the meantime, here’s a sneak preview of what’s changed in iMindMap 10 – let us know what you think in our friendly iMindMap Mad Discussion Group – it’s FREE!
PLUS, make sure to check out all our other sneak peaks and the original iMindMap 9 review below.
So, before, iMindMap 9 wasn’t integrated with our favourite on-line mind map depository, namely… Biggerplate. But that was before. Now, iMindMap 10 is.
Of course, anyone can already access all the mind maps on Biggerplate for free, whatever mind mapping software they are using, but there’s more to this new feature than meets the eye.
For a start, you can now search and download mind maps from the Biggerplate library from within iMindMap 10. There are thousands of mind maps there from many of the major software producers in many categories ranging from business and education to family and personal development topics.
The ThinkBuzan blurb says you can now search and download “thousands of mind map templates” from Biggerplate. While you can certainly spend a ridiculous amount of time looking through all manner of mind maps, there is a monthly limit of about five downloads for non-paying visitors I think, unless that’s been modified.
Next up is the ability to share your latest and greatest iMindMap 10 creations with the world on Biggerplate with a few clicks, again from within the software itself. This is something other programs have had for some time so it’s good to see it being incorporated here.
A slight caveat is that the temptation is to upload stuff without really asking if it’s really worthy of being shared with the world. And as an open platform, bless them, there is currently absolutely no quality control in place; anyone can upload anything.
The result is that there are, quite frankly, a huge number of terrible mind maps on Biggerplate as well as many high-quality and genuinely useful items too of course. Hey, they let me publish my Mad Mind Maps, so I’m not complaining or anything! ?
The researcher’s challenge is to find the good stuff quickly, and Biggerplate’s job is to help us to do so by refining their search tools and possibly developing some sort of peer-reviewed classification system or up-and-down voting technique or something similar to help separate the wheat from the chaff. I know that our friends there are constantly working on these sorts of questions but that’s a topic for another time!
Finally, and for me the biggest new feature reveal in this section, is that, from Version 10, iMindMap will “support files created using other mind mapping software”! So apparently we will be able to import useful mind maps from iMindQ, FreeMind, ConceptDraw, MindGenius, XMind and… MindManager. Wow! Now that’s huge!
They slip this information in casually buried at the end of a lengthy paragraph but its implications are wide-reaching.
I can’t even begin to imagine what it must have cost them in lost sleep to even acknowledge the existence of other mind mapping software producers, much less actually include their names on the sacred ThinkBuzan blog, but there it is – see for yourself (I’m joking guys ?)!
Now I can’t wait to see how easy it is to convert, say, a standard MindManager or XMind map to beautiful iMindMap format. It’s a real pain when someone sends you a link to an interesting map which can only be read by a piece of software you don’t have on your computer. Could this be a thing of the past? Only time will tell!
